Turnovers hinder HMS girls in loss to Mustangs
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn traveled to George November 28 to welcome George-Little Rock to War Eagle Conference basketball play. The Hawks committed twice as many turnovers (26) as their hosts (13) and lost 61-47 in a game that did not count in the conference standings.
Abby Douma topped HMS with 18 points while the Mustangs’ Lindsey Haken led all scorers with 25. For the Hawks, Kylee Schiphoff tallied 10 points, Lindsey Van Es eight, Moriah Otto six, Gracie Knobloch four and Addison Sheeler one. Knobloch distributed to the tune of five assists.
HMS outshot the home team 40 percent to 36 percent, but the Mustangs got 18 more shots at the basket. George-Little Rock hit four treys and the Hawks two. HMS went 13-of-23 from the free throw line compared to 15-of-29 for the Mustangs.
Otto grabbed nine rebounds and Schiphoff five. Douma blocked five shots while Schiphoff and Van Es each came away with two steals.
