HMS girls absorb road loss to Akron-Westfield
Akron-Westfield outscored Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn in each of the four quarters to hand the Hawks a 58-42 War Eagle Conference loss December 12 at Akron. HMS committed 23 turnovers and was outrebounded 34-23.
“Tuesday’s game against Akron was a tough loss as we had high expectations going into the game,” commented Hawk head coach Ashley Tessum. “Although we met some of our goals for the game, we needed to be more aggressive on offense and with rebounding.”
Moriah Otto scored 14 points, Kylee Schiphoff eight, Frankie Mohni seven, Abby Douma six, Lindsey Van Es five and Eliza Tewes two. Knobloch delivered six assists and Mohni four. Top rebounders were Schiphoff with eight and Douma with six. Douma also blocked five shots while Schiphoff and Mohni each recorded a steal.
HMS connected on 16-of-43 field goal tries for 37 percent. The Westerners were 19-of-57 from the floor for 33 percent. The Hawks went 5-for-15 from beyond the arc and Akron-Westfield 6-of-21. The Westerners enjoyed a big edge at the free throw line where they went 14-for-20 compared to 5-for-9 for HMS. The home team turned the ball over eight times.
