Not only did the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn track and field girls face some larger schools at the Okoboji Relays but some extremely talented athletes as well. Sioux Center, with 173 points, won over Spirit Lake, with 168 points, and Okoboji, with 142. The Hawks scored 19.5 points in the event held April 22 at Milford.
“In a tough field of competition at the Okoboji Relays, our girls competed hard,” commented HMS head coach Kirsten Taylor. “We ran season’s best times in both our sprint medley and 4×200 meter relays. Lexi Croatt led the way for the HMS girls with a fourth-place finish in the 3000 meter run. Jocelyn Abonce has been running consistent 400’s lately, and finished sixth overall in that race. Megan Otto matched another PR at 4’ 8’ to finish seventh. Mutombo sprinted personal bests in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes to place ninth and eighth, respectively. Our discus throwers both threw PR’s, as Eliza Tewes finished eighth and Hannah Tessum finished ninth. Our girls’ times are going down and our field marks are improving at the perfect time, with our next meet being the War Eagle Conference Meet at MMCRU. We expect to see strong performances in Marcus.”
