Offense comes to life as Hawks pummel MMCRU

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn produced a season-high for runs in an 11-3 victory over MMCRU June 21 at Remsen. After a short rain delay in the top of seventh inning, the game was called due to threatening weather. The win allowed the Hawks to raise their War Eagle Conference record to 2-5 and their season mark to 3-9.
“The girls played a great game,” declared HMS head coach Stephanie Bronstad. “They came out strong on the bats and played some good defense. Our pitchers need to continue to trust our defense and the girls need to continue to trust themselves as players. I am looking forward to next week’s games and hope to continue playing like we can.”
The Hawks opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the first. Kamryn Ebel singled and stole second. She scored on a double by Gracie Knobloch. A passed ball got Knobloch to third and Kinsey Schirmer then drove her in with a base hit.
After the Royals tied the game in the bottom of the inning, HMS went back to work in the second. Abby Otto led off the inning with a single. Delaney Murphy and Frankie Mohni each drew walks to load the bases. They weren’t loaded for long as Ebel laced a triple to clear them. After Knobloch walked and took second, Eliza Tewes singled to bring home Ebel. Schirmer picked up her second RBI in as many at bats with a bunt to score Knobloch.
The visitors padded the lead with three unearned runs over the next two innings. In the third, Ebel reached on an error with two outs. Addy Sheeler singled her to third and Knobloch brought her home with a base hit. The fourth inning began with Eliza Tewes being hit by a pitch. An MMCRU error put Schirmer aboard. Lindsey Van Es then executed a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners. A ball to short off the bat of Otto brought in Tewes and then an error by the shortstop allowed Schirmer to score.
The Royals notched their final run in the fifth when a bunt single was followed one out later by a triple. HMS tallied once more in the sixth as Van Es and Otto hit back-to-back doubles. The Hawks left seven runners on base while MMCRU stranded two.
Ebel’s night included a single, a triple, three runs scored and three batted in. Knobloch was 2-for-3 with two RBI’s and two runs scored. Both Schirmer and Otto went 2-for-4, batted in two and scored a run. Tewes went 1-for-3, scored a run and drove one in. Van Es and Mohni each had a hit and scored a run. Add in the single by Addy Sheeler and the Hawks totaled 12 hits.
Knobloch tossed all six innings. She sent 10 MMCRU batters back to the dugout on strikes. Knobloch allowed three hits, walked one batter and hit one. HMS played an error-free game.
