Winning Jays post a crooked number to spoil a good game with HMS
Gehlen Catholic put together an eight-run fifth inning to blow open what had been a competitive game with Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn. The Hawks were unable to answer and fell to the Jays 12-2 in five innings June 28 at Hartley. The loss dropped HMS to 1-8 in War Eagle Conference play and to 3-16 on the season.
The visitors opened the scoring with two runs in the first inning. The Hawks cut the deficit in half with a run in their first turn at bat. Jack Mastbergen was hit by a pitch and was driven in by Jacob Cates.
Gehlen tallied a run in both the third and fourth innings. A run by HMS in the bottom of the fourth made the score 4-2. Cates doubled and moved to third on a fielder’s choice. Cates scored on a single by Blake Meendering.
The hits in the fourth were the only two allowed by Jays pitcher Ashton Budden. He struck out three Hawks.
HMS gave the ball to Grant Kunzman to begin the game and he pitched 4-2/3 innings, giving up 10 runs on 10 hits. Six of the runs were earned. He walked two batters and hit two. Dominic Tripp finished the fifth inning, allowing two unearned runs on four hits. The Hawks were guilty of four errors.
