Hawks drop ‘home’ game on the road at South O’Brien
South O’Brien took advantage of control problems by Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn pitching to offset the Hawks’ 12-hit attack and come away with a 16-6 win over HMS in six innings. Even the hit total left the Hawks unfulfilled as they stranded nine runners. The June 24 contest was scheduled to be played at Hartley but the condition of the Hawks’ field after the torrential rains caused the location to be switched to Paullina.
The Wolverines opened the game by scoring three runs but HMS came right back with two runs in the bottom of the first. South O’Brien added four runs in the third and another in the fourth. The Hawks trimmed the lead to 8-3 with a run in the fifth, but the Wolverines put eight runs on the board in the sixth, five of which were unearned. HMS tallied three times in their half of the inning but two runners were left aboard and the game ended by the 10-run rule.
“The girls fought ‘til the end but it wasn’t our night,” commented HMS head coach Stephanie Bronstad. “We started the game struggling on the mound. Kinsey (Schirmer) came in and gave her best effort to help. Bats were decent but not enough, leaving too many girls on base.”
Kamryn Ebel took the ball to start the game and pitched 2-1/3 innings. She yielded seven earned runs on two hits. Ebel struck out five batters, walked two and hit five. Schirmer went the remaining 3-2/3 innings, allowing nine runs on five hits. Just four of those runs were earned. She walked four batters, hit two and struck out one. The Hawks were guilty of two errors. South O’Brien left six runners on base.
Tewes recorded a 3-for-3 night at the plate. She delivered a two-run single in the first inning, doubled in the fifth and her walk with the bases loaded in the sixth forced in a run. Schirmer went 3-for-4 including an RBI single in the sixth. Frankie Mohni was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Gracie Knobloch doubled and walked, scoring both times.
Cammy Wilson notched a base hit and also walked and scored. Addy Sheeler and Natalie Daggett each had a single. Delaney Murphy and Ebel both walked and scored.
