Hawks fail to convert enough scoring chances in loss to South O’Brien
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn pounded out 12 hits and drew five walks in its matchup with South O’Brien. However, the Hawks could only get a fraction of those runners across the plate in an 8-5 loss June 24 at Hartley.
HMS found itself down 2-0 after a half inning, but they immediately tied the game. Aiden Bush, Jacob Cates and Lawton Schiphof all singled to load the bases. An error allowed Bush to score and then Grant Kunzman singled to drive in Cates.
Three runs in the second inning and two more in the third staked the Wolverines to a 7-2 lead. In the fourth frame the Hawks picked up a run as Kunzman and Ricky Smith singled and Kunzman scored on an error.
HMS tallied again in the sixth. Kunzman singled again and Smith and Brody Meendering drew walks. A sacrifice fly by Jack Mastbergen brought in Smith. After South O’Brien scored a run in the seventh, the Hawks built a threat in the bottom of the inning. Walks to Cates, Blake Meendering and Kunzman filled the bases. Cates came home on an error but Meendering was out trying to score, ending the game.
Kunzman and Brody Meendering were each 3-for-3 at the plate. Schiphoff went 2-for-4. Bush, Cates, Smith and Blake Meendering each had one hit.
Bush was the starting pitcher. He walked three batters and allowed a hit and two earned runs before being relieved by Mastberen. The latter’s two plus innings on the mound resulted in five runs (four earned) on five hits with four strikeouts, three walks and a hit batter. Cates finished the game, striking out 12 batters. He allowed one earned run on four hits. HMS committed just one error.
