Hawks experience delayed gratification in win over Alta-Aurelia
Weather intervened to cool down Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn and revitalize Alta-Aurelia but HMS was able to persevere, coming away with an 11-8 win over the Warriors June 27 at Alta. The home team put six runs on the board in the sixth inning to make things close.
“Girls played a great game,” observed Hawk head coach Stephanie Bronstad. “The thunder delay didn’t help our momentum as we were hitting the ball well and then came out flat. They got a new life and started hitting Kamryn (Ebel) although she pitched a nice game. Kinsey (Schirmer) came in and finished. Defensively, the girls worked together and it is great to see the team put it all together right before tournaments start.”
Alta-Aurelia scored a run in the first inning but HMS came back with a pair in the second. Abby Otto got aboard on a fielder’s choice and Delaney Murphy doubled. Frankie Mohni singled home Otto while Murphy scored on an error.
The Warriors tied the game in the fourth. The fifth inning saw the Hawks regain the lead as Ebel led off with a base hit and scored on an RBI single from Eliza Tewes.
The sixth was a big inning for the Hawks as they scored seven runs. Lindsey Van Es walked and Otto singled. Both came home on Murphy’s base hit. Ebel singled again and Murphy scored on an error. After Addy Sheeler was hit by a pitch, Gracie Knobloch drove in Ebel. Tewes and Schirmer delivered back-to-back base hits. They, along with Sheeler, scored on errors.
After the Warriors narrowed the deficit, HMS added an insurance run in the top of the seventh. Ebel drew a two-out walk, as did Sheeler. It was a single by Knobloch that plated Ebel.
Ebel reached base all five times she came to the plate with two hits, two walks and a hit by pitch. Tewes went 3-for-5 and Murphy 2-for-4. Natalie Daggett recorded one hit as did Knobloch, Schirmer, Otto and Mohni. The Hawks left eight runners on base while Alta-Aurelia stranded 13.
Ebel went six plus innings in the circle, yielding eight runs on eight hits. Just three of the runs were earned as the HMS defense totaled seven errors. Ebel struck out eight batters, walked five and hit four. Schirmer came on to get three batters in order, one by strikeout.
