It’s all Gehlen as Lady Jays blank Hawks
Not much went right for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn in its War Eagle Conference matchup with Gehlen Catholic. The Hawks were outhit 10-3 and committed five errors in losing to the Lady Jays 10-0 in five innings June 28 at Hartley. With the loss, HMS dipped to 3-6 in the conference and to 5-11 on the season.
“Tonight was not our night,” lamented Hawk head coach Stephanie Bronstad. “We struggled from the beginning with batting and confidence. Our fielding errors got the best of our defense. Gracie (Knobloch) pitched a nice game and stayed consistent but Gehlen was hitting the ball hard and our defense folded.”
Gehlen scored once in the second inning, four times in the third and then put a five-spot on the board in the fifth. Knobloch tossed all five innings, striking out 10 batters, walking three and hitting one. Six of the ten runs were earned.
Kamryn Ebel led off the first inning with a base hit but the Hawks had to wait until Kinsey Schirmer’s single in the fourth for their next one. The final hit came off the bat of Frankie Mohni in the fifth. HMS stranded seven baserunners in all. The Lady Jays left six on base.
Gehlen 0 1 4 0 5 – 10
