Hawk bowlers again beat West Sioux

For the second time this season, the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn boys and girls picked up wins over West Sioux. This time it was a home meet, held January 21 at Locomotion Lanes.
“Our meet was back at home in Sanborn and we were very happy to be back on our home lanes,” said HMS head coach Julia Meyer. “We worked through some ups and downs and made the necessary adjustments. We had a good team effort for both boys and girls.”
The HMS boys won 3017 to 2503. “The boys started off strong despite a few initial miscues,” noted Meyer. “They made necessary adjustments to improve their shots and maintained their pace, eventually securing a solid lead. After the individual games, we were ahead by 326 pins and after the Baker games they came away with the win by 514 pins.”
Eli Mastbergen bowled a 276 and a 201 for the high two-game score of 477. Graham Lux rolled a 228 and a 203 for a 431 total. Luke Dagel bowled a 221, Dawson Niichel a 211 and Hunter Daggett a 204. The boys’ Baker games were 208, 175, 160, 190 and 231.
The Hawk girls bowled against the two girls making up the West Sioux team. Meyer explained that, because of the situation, both teams bowled three individual games and no Baker games. Under this format the Hawks won 2229 to 739. “The girls were just as delighted to be back in Sanborn and their scores were evidence of that,” said their coach. “The girls are showing improved accuracy in making their spares, but we still continue to work on this during practice.”

Jordan Lux turned in the high game of 212. She also rolled a 169 a produced the high three-game total of 486. Among the other high games were Kaidence Shaffer’s 180 and 160 and Mason VerHelst’s 169 and 156.
“Each meet helps build confidence and improve their skills, which can make a significant impact when it comes time to qualify in February for state for both girls and boys,” commented Meyer.
The seven HMS boys JV bowlers and the two Hawk JV girls all had the opportunity to bowl three individual games. “The Junior Varsity boys and girls have been bowling impressively also,” said Meyer. “Their improvement as the year progresses is commendable, and I am very proud of their efforts. We have a wealth of talent waiting in the wings.”
