Hawk girls answer challenge from South O’Brien


Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn fought off a South O’Brien rally with a surge of its own to defeat the Wolverines 53-43 January 21 at Hartley. The game matched up War Eagle Conference opponents but did not count in the conference standings.
The Hawks led 11-3 following a good first quarter but later trailed by four before moving back in front 20-18 at halftime. South O’Brien held a 30-26 lead with three minutes gone in the third quarter but HMS outscored the Wolverines 14-1 to enter the final period in front 40-31. The Hawks did not allow the margin to drop below seven points the rest of the way.
All seven of Kylee Schiphoff’s buckets came from three-point range and she finished with 23 points. Abby Douma added 14 points, Moriah Otto and Lindsey Van Es five points each, Gracie Knobloch four and Frankie Mohni two. Knobloch contributed six assists.
Schiphoff collected 10 boards, Otto eight and Douma seven as HMS outrebounded the Wolverines 34-18. Otto had three steals and a block and Douma five blocks and two steals. The turnover totals were nearly equal with the Hawks committing 14 and South O’Brien 15.
