Three-point shooting lifts Westerners past HMS girls
Akron-Westfield used the trey to its advantage in downing Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn 62-51 January 24 at Akron. The Westerners launched 28 shots from behind the three-point line and made 11 of them. Meanwhile HMS was just 2-of-15 from deep in falling to 3-4 in the War Eagle Conference. The outcome left each team at 9-7 on the season.
Both teams shot 41 percent overall with Akron-Westfield going 20-for-49 and the Hawks 18-for-44. Neither team gained much of an advantage at the free throw line where the Westerners were 11-of-18 and HMS 13-of-25.
Moriah Otto scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Hawks in both of those categories. Kylee Schiphoff tallied eight points, Gracie Knobloch and Abby Douma seven apiece, Lindsey Van Es and Eliza Tewes three each, Addy Sheeler two and Frankie Mohni one. Knobloch notched five assists.
Otto helped HMS finish with a 34-19 edge on the boards. Schiphoff and Douma each grabbed five rebounds and Knobloch collected four. Douma blocked three shots and Knobloch made four steals. The Hawks were guilty of 19 turnovers while Akron-Westfield turned the ball over 12 times.
