Okoboji/HMS produces two conference champs at Siouxland Wrestling Tourney
The Okoboji/HMS boys wrestling team saw two of its own crowned conference champions as the Pioneers competed in the Siouxland Conference Tournament held January 30 at Sioux Center. Chase Franklin finished first in the 120-pound weight class and Tyce Hanson won at 132 pounds.
As a team, Okoboji/HMS scored 185.5 points. They trailed only Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley which claimed the team championship with a score of 198.5.
Pioneers wrestling for a championship but finishing in the runner-up position were Blake Knudtson at 106 pounds, Tyler Pyle at 165 pounds and Nathaniel Franklin at 175.
The two HMS wrestlers competing were Nathan Stofferan and Riley Mattingly. Stofferan placed third at 113 pounds and Mattingly was sixth at 215.
Stofferan received a bye into the semifinal where he met Samuel Quevedo. The Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley grappler won a 14-1 major decision over Stofferan. The HMS junior got a bye into the 3rd Place Match. There he scored an 18-1 technical fall victory over West Lyon’s Trenton Anderson in 4:35.
Mattingly lost his quarterfinal match by fall to Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley’s Cozyn Rozeboom in 1:27. His first consolation round match was a 17-16 victory over German Topete of MOC-Floyd Valley. The HMS freshman lost his consolation semifinal match by fall to West Lyon’s Jackson VerMeer in 44 seconds. The 5th Place Match pitted Mattingly against Cael Harman of Central Lyon/George-Little Rock. Mattingly was the victim of a pin in 1:15.
