Despite some peak performances, the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn track and field boys were unable to get any tickets to State punched in competition at the Class 1A State Qualifying Meet held May 15 in Armstrong with North Union as the host. The top place winner in each event moved on to State (as in all of the Qualifying Meets), along with the next fourteen best performances statewide from Qualifying Meet place winners.
“The kids did a great job of going out and competing and putting together some of their best performances at the biggest meet of the year,” noted Hawk coach Korey Ebel. “I’m really proud of the growth we made this year. We appreciate all of the seniors’ hard work and leadership they provided this year.”
The seniors on the this year’s squad are Damian Dodge, Blaine Finster, Ryan Grotluschen, Peyton Morton, Jose Perez-Perez.
HMS was 10th at the Qualifying Meet with 34 points. There was a tie at the top as Sibley-Ocheyedan and North Iowa each scored 110 points.
The best finishes for the Hawks were the fourth-place efforts by Caden Douma in the high jump and by the 4×100 relay of Caleb Grotluschen, Graham Lux, Perez-Perez and Nathan Stofferan. Placing fifth were Isaac Schierholz in the high jump, Stofferan in the 100 meters and Lux in the 200 meters. Sixth place went to Alex Billings in the shot put and to Ryan Grotluschen in the 400 meters.
